About Katie

Dr. Katie Lauren Krug Filling, also known as Bird, was a devoted mother, wife, educator, and advocate who lived with fierce purpose and boundless love. 

Katie’s greatest joy was her children, who were the center of her world. She always made time for her family and friends cherishing everyday moments and creating lasting memories.

Katie dedicated her life to education and to the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and to be truly valued. 

Those who knew her gave her the nickname Wonder Woman because of her strength and unwavering will-power to continue to mother, work, teach, lead, and pursue her doctorate, while at the same time navigating the physical and emotional challenges of her cancer. She did not allow her diagnosis to define her; instead, she chose to live fully, bravely, and with purpose. 

Katie was extremely grateful for the Mercy Medical Community, who provided extraordinary care, compassion, and unwavering support throughout the 10 years that she fearlessly faced Ovarian Cancer. Their dedication gave her more moments, more memories, and more time to inspire us. 

Katie touched numerous lives with her brilliance, compassion, courage, humor, wit and remarkable ability to make others feel seen, valued, and believed in. 

Her life is a lesson.
Her strength is a gift.
Her example will endure.
